January in the Garden

January is a symbol of hope for me. I have been day dreaming every day. I think about my upcoming garden, all the things I want to accomplish in the new year, and what goals I want to achieve for myself.

For now, let’s take a closer look at the garden.

Cincinnati being a zone 6a, I can start planning out my beds. I just picked up seeds from dollar tree and home depot. I got my calendar out and started marking it up. This year is the first time I will be attempting some level of food production for me and my family. I have tomatoes, carrots, squash, parsnips, beans, onions, strawberries, and herbs of all kinds. I am also lucky enough to have inherited a pear tree and two other mystery variety apple trees.

When looking at my dream list I felt a bit overwhelmed. To keep me on track and be more organized, I am going to connect my plans with my calendar. I get distracted and tend to pick up too many projects so I really want to set myself up for success by not allowing any of these seeds to be forgotten.

As far as what can actually be done here in January, there are a few maintenance things that I can do. Cleaning tools, sanitizing pots, filling and preparing raised beds, cleaning solar panels for better efficiency, pruning fruit trees, and having my cistern inspected. The last one is super important because it is the only source connected to my watering hose. It was disconnected by the house flippers so we are going to make sure it is good to go before we reconnect our gutters to it.

Because it is January in Ohio, I may not be able to do the things that require me to be outside. This means some of my, “to-dos,” may fall into February. I am not too worried about it as long as they get done before March!

After my initial calendar planning I will start coming up with the garden bed design. I hear some people use google sheets, some people use graph paper, I'm going to use procreate with the grid function.

As far as seed planting goes, I know some people start onions now. I just started my lavender seeds and will be sowing pansy’s indoors as well. And I have some cold stratification lined up this month.

That pretty much wraps up my January to-dos.

  1. Write down garden goals

  2. Put dates on the calendar

  3. Make realistic deadlines and plans

  4. Create garden bed mock-ups

  5. Start the “spring cleaning”

  6. Do some seed things

I would love to know what you all are doing for your January. I hope it’s a good one!

Take Care,

Jacqueline Marie
