Week of 2/9/2025, garden journal.

This winter I have spent many hours dedicated to organizing space in my basement and gathering my seeds from all corners of this house. With me being in my second year of food production efforts, and year one was mostly infrastructure, there aren’t many. I can easily fit all of them right in front of me.
This feels like the perfect opportunity to reflect on my availability this season.
I am giving birth in prime spring planting season, I won’t have new garden beds to plant in, and I might not have time to harvest everyday.
Also, storage. I have limited storage this year. More than last year, but not by much. I won’t be able to grow or store a year’s worth of anything so food production for me this year looks like cutting a few things out of my grocery list.

So right now, with my seeds out in front of me, I am going to look through what I have and decide what I want to plant.
(3)Scallions, (1 Patch)Carrots, (3 Roma, 2 Slicing)Tomatoes, (4)Chamomile, (3)Cilantro, (5)Dill, (3)Loofah, (4)Pumpkin, (6)Nasturtiums.
These are the seeds I want to start this year.
Here’s what I have coming back: Lavender, Rosemary, Echinacea, Oregano, Strawberry, Chamomile, Passionfruit,
Here’s what I want left: Mint, Basil, Thyme,
Seed Count(personal): 9 types, 29 starts

I am also going to be starting some seeds for my local non-profit, Love Our Land.
Here’s what I am planting: (4)Wild Senna, (3)Wild Blue Indigo, (6)Little Bluestem, (6)Wild Bergamot, (4)Button Bush, (5)Turtlehead, and (3)Kentucky Coffee Tree.
These are all native to Ohio or North America.
Seed Count(volunteer): 7 types, 31 starts
Total Seeds to Start: 16 types, 60 starts
Using two greenhouse towers with shoe trays to line the shelves will do the trick. One will be kept in my living room and one will be kept in the kitchen. I think I can do it!
I am going to be sowing Kentucky Coffee Tree and Turtlehead to wrap up this week. I'll be updating as we continue with planting and as the seeds emerge.

Good luck and take care,
Jacqueline Marie
